HEARTLEAF BOOKS

Heartleaf Books is Rhode Island’s only employee-owned, queer/trans-owned, cooperative bookstore, uniquely managed by its feline companions. Located in the heart of Federal Hill in Providence, this bookstore is more than just a place to buy books — it’s a vibrant community hub for gathering, learning, and exploration. Heartleaf Books offers a carefully curated selection of new and used books, art, and gifts for people of all ages, from babies to centenarians. The store’s mission is to inspire and challenge visitors through the power of the written word, reflecting the diverse and dynamic community that made it possible.

Founded in the summer of 2021 by sibling librarians Caroline Vericker and Mads Vericker, Heartleaf Books started as a pop-up shop at local markets before opening its brick-and-mortar location in September 2022. With the support of their membership and the Cooperative Fund of the Northeast, the Verickers turned their dream into a reality. Heartleaf Books is guided by a seven-member Board of Directors, including worker-owners Caroline and Mads and five dedicated consumer-owners. As a cooperative, Heartleaf thrives on community involvement and collective leadership, inviting everyone to become a member and be part of this inclusive, literary-driven space.
